An interior concept project completed by Mitchell Studios to showcase Shou-Sugi-Ban.
Shou-Sugi-Ban, called “yakisugi” in Japan, means “burned cedar board” and was widely used in the 18th century on rural homes and rice storehouses that commonly were susceptible to fires. Shou-Sugi-Ban is a natural, non-toxic way to preserve wood and can last up-to 100 years without maintenance.
Presented in a contemporary space, the black charred cedar wood is showcased in giant totem form alongside a complementing aesthetic both materialistically and in form. Pieces of furniture specifically designed using the Shou-Sugi-Ban technique adorn the space and are found throughout the winding gallery.
